Happy Christmas poem

A mountain of presents to deliver in one night

He huffs and sighs at the terrible sight

More presents than ever, of all shapes and size.

‘Oh this night will see my demise!’

He pulls on the red coat

Over his stomach and bloat

‘Shouldn’t have had that last mince pie.

I hope I don’t fall from the sky.’

The bright Aurora bounces across the sky.

He looks up and asks ‘I don’t understand why.

Letters are still arriving at the North Pole

No end to this everlasting goal.

The reindeer will be ready after their rest

Every year they do their best.

The sleigh is heavier than ever this year

Full of ipads and laptops and tech so dear!

When did the meaning of Christmas change?

I find this season of wanting so strange.

I used to deliver oranges, sweets and cheer.

People used to be grateful to have loved ones near.

Now all they want is an expensive gift.

Even from those that they have a rift.

I’m losing my faith in the human race.

They’ve taken a massive fall from grace.’

Mrs Clause handed him a letter written in red pencil

‘Read this my love, this girl’s request is special.’

‘Dear Santa, my dad is in heaven. He lives there.

Can you bring him back for Christmas night?

So I can hug him and see if he’s alright?’

His tears fell onto the page smearing the letters so small.

‘This young girl doesn’t want anything but her dad to call.’

His wife took his hand.

‘You’ve done this job for so long, it’s easy to forget but you must understand.

Everyone wants the gifts you can provide tomorrow.

Because for a moment they can escape their pain and sorrow.

They know you can’t give them wealth or fame

Or for someone they like to know their name.

You can’t stop winter taking another bite.

Or stop someone from starting a fight

You can’t stop the battles or the wars

I know you would if you could of course!

For someone who flinches at the slightest touch

You can’t give them someone who cares so much

But their belief in you and your story is enough.

It gives them hope when times are tough.

They wait for you on Christmas Eve

A time of magic for adults and kids who believe.

That there is good in the world.

Even after everything that has unfurled.

That belief gives them the power to do the things you cannot

They help each other and that counts for a lot.

Fly under the aurora and light the night.

Deliver your gifts and let them see you mid flight.

You think your contribution to the world is small

But in the grand scheme of things, it is the best of all.

You can’t fix everything but you can deliver a moment of happiness through your story.
